I think the jump from 3 to 2 in a year (old style) would require a *lot* of work. If you can sit a July exam I'd do N3 and see how you feel about N2 after that. It's still a big step.
If you have no pressing need for the certification I'd just steadily study for the benefit of being able to speak to your in-laws, and to be able to help pass on Japanese to your daughter.

My plans. Gosh.
I don't seem to be able to find the time to study I once had, and for the past year I haven't had classes, so realistically N2 is out of the question. I think I will try N3 this year, and since kanji is my favourite, I am already preparing for the next kanken. My medium term goal is to crack the grade school kanji and pass grade 5, but this year 7 would be as far as I'd go.

Great post, Robert. I was wondering when they'd start rolling out new textbooks, and yes I know what you mean about awkward titles. :D

I also noticed the new sample test questions on the main JLPT site and had some fun trying my luck. I was surprised to see how easy N3 was for me, but I think I over studied for old JLPT3, so I may be almost ready for that. N2, however, was quite a struggle, so more work to be done there. ;)

Maybe I should hedge my bets and go for N3 this year, and N2 by next year. What do you think? What's your plan this year?
