for anyone else that might wander along.
From scratch/zero knowledge it took 4 years. I looked at that the other day and thought that's a long time!
I did intend to do JLPT4 in my first year but never got it together, so that happened year 2, then something similar when doing 3, At the time of application I felt I just didn't have a good enough grounding so I put it off a year. Now looking at 2 ... I doubt I can do it this year just not enough spare time.

I think you could go from 4 to 3 in a year with a bit of effort. (My Japanese study can be a bit relaxed to my regret) As you know there are so many variables but if you can put the hours in it's doable.

I would get hold of a past paper and sit it under exam conditions. If you are confident with JLPT4 material aim for JLPT3.

Question: You mentioned that it took 4 years to study for JLPT 3. I am starting off on the JLPT 3 (beginning of the year), but with some Japanese background before this. Did you start from scratch, or did you have Japanese background prior? Also, would you recommend starting with the JLPT4 instead, or will taking the JLPT be fine?

Thanks!

P.S. Welcome to my own blog by the way (you left a nice post earlier). Feel free to email me instead, as it's easier to hold a conversation that way. Thanks!
